This original 1928 press photograph, issued by Wide World Photos, captures Capt. George Haldeman and Eddie Stinson receiving a $5,000 check from Jimmie Marr of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce after their historic endurance flight over Jacksonville, Florida.
The two aviators set a new world record for sustained flight, remaining aloft for 53 hours, 37 minutes, and 10 seconds. Their achievement was an important milestone in aerial endurance, helping advance the understanding of long-haul aviation and aerial refueling.
