Rare 1927 Vintage Press Photograph – "Aerial Cave Man" Aviator Charles La Jotte’s Failed Sky Proposal
This original 1927 press photograph, issued by Wide World Photos, captures young aviator Charles La Jotte standing beside his airplane after an ill-fated attempt at an airborne marriage proposal.
According to the press caption, La Jotte, a San Diego-based pilot, invited Miss Noreen Burke, a San Diego socialite, and a friend for a joy ride in his aircraft. However, his real intent was to propose mid-flight, hoping the romance of the skies would win her over. Unfortunately, Burke responded with a firm "No."
The disheartened pilot returned with her to Los Angeles, where relatives and sheriff’s deputies intervened, taking Burke home and detaining La Jotte for questioning. Released shortly after, he flew home, disappointed and alone.
This photo is a fantastic piece of early aviation history, illustrating the romanticism and daring spirit of 1920s pilots. It is perfect for collectors of vintage aviation, early barnstorming memorabilia, and unique historical press photographs.
