This original 1937 photograph shows the Bowlus-DuPont Senior Albatross (registration NC13763) on the ground at the National Soaring Championships in Elmira, New York. The dramatic upward angle reveals the underside of the translucent fabric-covered wing, with the bold registration numbers illuminated in sunlight.

Owned and flown in this event by Warren E. Eaton, a prominent soaring competitor and Hall of Fame inductee, NC13763 was among the most elegant and capable sailplanes of its day. Designed by Hawley Bowlus and financed by Rodman Wanamaker, the Senior Albatross was a hallmark of American prewar soaring design, known for its long, graceful lines and efficient performance.

The 1937 Elmira Nationals brought together the nation’s top pilots and most advanced sailplanes, making this image not only visually striking but also historically significant. It offers a rare combination of clear registration, documented pilot, and confirmed championship provenance.
