This original August 4, 1933 ACME News Service press photograph shows legendary British aviatrix Amy Johnson Mollison and her husband Captain James A. Mollison arriving at Northeastern Airways Field, Bridgeport, Connecticut. The couple had just survived a crash landing while attempting a transatlantic flight from Great Britain to New York.
In this candid image, Amy—wearing her stylish travel attire and trademark scarf—stands beside Jim, who remains composed despite the ordeal. Around them are well-wishers and officials gathered to honor their courage. Visible in the background is the corrugated fuselage of a large transport aircraft, likely used in connection with their arrival at the ceremonies.
The Mollisons were just 60 miles short of New York when they crashed, yet they had already conquered the most dangerous portion of their journey across the Atlantic Ocean. In recognition of their bravery and contribution to aviation, Bridgeport Airport was renamed Mollison Airport in their honor.
This photograph, with its clear composition and strong historic ties, captures both the glamour and danger of the Golden Age of Aviation. Complete with its original press caption and archival stamps from the N.E.A. and ACME News, it is an exceptional collectible for aviation history enthusiasts and early flight memorabilia collectors.
