This original August 21, 1942 press photograph shows the Waco XCG-3, U.S. Army designation A-37, a rare prototype assault glider built by the Waco Aircraft Company in Troy, Ohio. Designed to carry 30 troops or equivalent cargo, the A-37 was one of the largest U.S. troop-carrying gliders ever tested, featuring a high-mounted wing, twin-wheel landing gear, and a capacious fuselage.
Only two A-37 prototypes were built before the project was canceled in favor of the smaller, more agile Waco CG-4A. As a result, photographs of the A-37 are exceptionally rare, especially with original wartime press markings and release captions.
This image was issued by the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA) just prior to public release, as noted by the reverse caption slip. It captures the glider on a grass airfield, likely during initial evaluation trials.
Condition: Light editorial crop marks, minor edge wear, original press caption intact.
Dimensions: Approx. 8" x 10"
Provenance: NEA press archives
