This original April 22, 1940 ACME News press photograph captures pilot Don Stevens with Mrs. Mary Rose Geberini at Bakersfield, California, following his ambitious attempt to break his own glider loop record. Flying a Bowlus sailplane, Stevens completed 86 consecutive loops before a loss of altitude forced him to land—short of his previous record of 93.
The image shows Stevens in a suit and tie, leaning against the nose of his sleek Bowlus glider, alongside Geberini, who holds a camera and smiles warmly. The mountainous backdrop hints at the challenging conditions of the day. The Bowlus name is clearly visible on the glider’s fuselage.
This photograph is a remarkable glimpse into the daring spirit of pre-WWII American soaring, as well as the pioneering aerobatic feats attempted in unpowered aircraft. Original ACME caption and editorial stamps remain on the reverse.
