This remarkable vintage photograph captures Major James Edward Monroe, the youngest son of James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States. Taken when Monroe was 109 years old, the image is accompanied by an original Keystone View Company press caption describing his extraordinary life and steadfast spirit.
The caption notes that Monroe, a staunch believer in the Monroe Doctrine, had been “squatting” on his Jacksonville, Florida property for 65 years, fending off numerous eviction attempts. Despite being eligible for pensions from participation in four wars, he continued working—most recently as a rivet passer in a shipyard during World War I, proudly stating he had never misplaced a rivet.
An extraordinary piece of presidential family history, early 20th-century Americana, and social history, offering a rare glimpse into the life of a man directly connected to America’s founding political legacy.
