This rare original 1934 photograph captures aviation legend Doug Davis at the Cleveland National Air Races, standing proudly with the Shell Trophy after winning at an incredible 306.127 MPH. Pictured alongside him are Cliff Henderson and Alice “Joy” Blue, known as “The Dream Girl.”
Poignantly, this image was taken just 20 minutes before Davis’ fatal crash, making it a haunting yet historically significant artifact from the Golden Age of Air Racing. The Shell Trophy, floral garland, and the smiles of the participants contrast sharply with the tragedy that soon followed.
The reverse of the photograph includes detailed handwritten period notes, enhancing its provenance and collector appeal. While the image shows signs of age, including some staining and corner wear, it remains a powerful piece of air race history suitable for serious collectors and museums alike.
