This original International News Photos (INP) press photograph, dated January 20, 1943, captures an extraordinary and little-known chapter of WWII military aviation—the debut of the first amphibious military glider. Photographed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this experimental craft was designed to land on water, delivering troops to coastal or island objectives without powered engines.

In the image, U.S. Marines—fully equipped for combat—are seen walking across the wing of the glider after landing. Behind them stand officers and crew, including Capt. B.E. Figley and Capt. J.B. Mauldin, observing the operation. In the background, PBY Catalinas and other amphibious aircraft reinforce the maritime setting.

The press caption describes this as the first amphibious glider in the world, an innovative concept developed during the rapid wartime experimentation of 1942–1943. While the design never entered mass production, it remains a fascinating example of the U.S. military’s willingness to push the boundaries of troop insertion tactics.

💡 Historical Note:
Amphibious gliders represented a daring, if ultimately impractical, concept. They promised silent troop landings on beaches or harbors but were overtaken by the speed and flexibility of powered amphibious aircraft. Surviving images—such as this—are exceptionally rare.
